AMD will bring out the new six-core Istanbul processor in early 2009. The chip manufacturer plans to switch to the SOI (silicon-on-insulator) 45-nanometer process. Also the server CPU Barcelona will undergo the same 45-nanometer SOI process and will transform into the upcoming Shanghai.
According to the die-shot, you can see here, the new AMD chip will feature 6 MB of L3 cache shared among all the cores.
Depending on the CPU socket the CPU will come with either DDR2 or DDR3 support. Each core will have 512KB of L2 cache. The L1 cache is 256KB.
