Before I got Vonage which gives me free long distance calling (both in the US and to Canada and parts of the UK and Europe), I used phone cards. it was hugely cheaper than going through my phone company. I would get the AT&T cards which were about 5 cents per minute on average. I loved those things because I could call from anywhere, including work, without worrying about my bill. And when I ran low on minutes, I could use my debit card to reload it on-line.
