Do you remember? Now it is 50 years ago! The starting signal for the race in the universe was a beep. As the Soviet Union on 4. October 1957 - with the Sputnik the first artificial satellite into an earth orbit shot, possessed this nothing else as a robust radio station. “First! ”, the beep signaled to the Americans. As reaction on the Sputnik the USA altogether 25.4 billion a dollar expensive research program to adjust the "disgrace of the Sputnik" (John F. Kennedy) witch was done by the moon-landing of Neil Armstrong to 21. July 1969.

I remember my Dad taking us outside to watch Sputnik pass over, it was so exciting to him, and he passed that excitement on to us. He worked for the aeronautics division of Kearfott, later Singer Kearfott, and was involved designing parts for several space missions in the space race to follow, I could go on with stories :-) But thanks for the memory :-) He passed away this month, 2 years ago, on the 19th. Miss you, Dad.
