Be very careful with your Data on your Hard disk before give it away! Only 30% of the users do erase their hard disk (or other storage e.g. USB-Stick, SD-Card....)
Some people forget it or even don´t think about it to clear the Hard disk before the give it away.
Other people don´t know how they have to do it. If you think to format a Hard disk is all you have to do - very bad! They are so many Tools you can use for bringing back your data even after formatted it. So be careful and do it right. Get a tool (normally for free) or use one of the many Linux systems to erase it without leave a chance to reconstruct the data.
The most important thing is that you now know about it what to do. Or you want to leave some sensitive or very private data on a hard disk which you give away?

I prefer to do it with Linux - OK - not so comfortable but I´m 100% sure that it works how it should.
Start up a Linux (Live-CD/DVD or Install CD)/DVD) (but do not install :-)
go to the command prompt and write
* Beware only plug in the hard disk you want to erase!
dd if=dev/null of=/dev/hda (It will overwrite the hard disk with "0" (Zero)
dd if=/dev/random of/dev/hda (It will overwrite the hard disk with random "100110111..."
* Beware only plug in the hard disk you want to erase!
