AMD with PowerSaving 45nm

The new AMD Opteron is the first 45-nanometer chip made by Advanced Micro Devices. The new processors are being shipped ahead of schedule and promises faster performance while using 35 percent less power consumption.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc is shipping its next generation of AMD Opteron chips ahead of schedule. The new AMD processor offers faster performance with 35 percent less power consumption.

AMD Opteron is a quad core processor which are used in servers. The company shipped the new processor months ahead of schedule to compete with rival Intel Corp. Intel currently has 80 percent of the global market for microprocessors.

The new AMD Opteron is also code-named "Shanghai" which was first unveiled last year. The quad core is the first 45-nanometer chip made by the company. Each core operates independently on the chip. The chip is also smaller in size than the previous generation of processors.

The new processor is energy efficient which can automatically turn off non-working parts which are not in use. Overall, the new chip uses 35 percent less energy.

There are two versions of the AMD Opteron chip available. The second processor is a more enhanced version which will be available at the end of the month. IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems and Dell are among 25 systems vendors who will be shipping servers this quarter with the new Opteron chip installed.

Dell earnings down!

That is real hard for Dell because they earnings down 64 percent from last year!

The PC maker announced Thursday it recorded a net income of $290 million for the first quarter of fiscal year 2010, and earnings of 24 cents per share, or 15 cents per share when accounting for write downs from severance pay and factory closings during the quarter. That's down 63 percent from the $784 million, and 38 cents per share recorded a year ago. Revenues were also down 23 percent to $12.3 billion.

Analysts on average had been expecting revenue of $12.66 billion, and earnings between 19 cents and 27 cents per share.

"It started out as a slow first (fiscal) quarter. It picked up a bit in the second half of the quarter," Chief Financial Officer Brian Gladden said on a call with reporters Thursday. But he said it was "still a challenging IT demand environment" and emphasized that Dell is not yet ready to say that the drop in demand has yet reached its lowest point.

Dell has been saying for the last few quarters that since its core customer base--corporate IT departments--are being battered by the economy, it would try to focus on internal housekeeping tasks like cutting expenses and operating costs. Gladden said the company's operating expenses had fallen by $101 million from the previous quarter and by $312 million from a year ago.

Despite that, Dell is still facing major challenges. Revenues decreased in every major business unit significantly, though a relatively bright spot appeared to be the consumer group. Consumer revenue was down 16 percent to $2.8 billion, and consumer shipments rose 12 percent from a year ago. It's been spending much more on research and development on products down in Round Rock, Texas, and produced yet another Netbook, and more notebook models--including the high-priced Adamo--during the quarter.

Asus Radeon HD 4890

ASUS 'EAH4890 videocard is going to capture the attention of a lot of enthusiasts. ATI's Radeon HD 4890 has so far proved to be one of the fastest single-GPU videocards on the market. The closest performing counterpart from NVIDIA, the Geforce GTX 285, is significantly more expensive. Combine that with the ability to play pretty much any game at 1920 x 1200 resolution with all eye candy options turned to their maximum, and the ASUS EAH4890 HTDI/1GD5/A is a compelling videocard for anyone who's serious about having a high-quality gaming experience.

Integrated Chipsets Today

Enthusiasts used to fear the “integrated” moniker, as it generally meant both pathetic performance and inflexibility, regardless of whether the chipset was provided by AMD, Intel, Nvidia, SiS, VIA, or someone else. But those days are now long past. Even the cheapest desktop system you can get today will be fast enough to browse the Web, work on office files, and play multimedia content.

Today’s integrated chipsets not only include relatively flexible graphics units, they also come with quick network controllers, plenty of USB and storage interfaces, and limited--but still available--upgrade paths. Many of them can even be paired with high-performance processors, turning these systems into fairly muscular desktop PCs.
